NIACE Commission of Inquiry | 11 November 2007

NIACE have launched a Commission of Inquiry, looking into "The future for lifelong learning: a national strategy".

They have just published the first briefing, intended to inform those with an interest in the inquiry about the progress of the commission and to highlight opportunities to contribute to the debate about the future for lifelong learning in the UK.

English Heritage National Capacity Building Programme | 9 November 2007

Launch of a new programme which provides funding to national and local voluntary and other organisations for projects which promote the conservation, understanding and enjoyment of the historic environment.

One of the priorities is for projects which promote the cultural diversity of England's heritage.

National Indicators for Local Authorities and Local Authority Partnerships: Handbook of Definitions | 9 November 2007

As part of the Comprehensive Spending Review announcement the Government recently published the single set of 198 national indicators that will underpin the new performance framework.

The Government is now consulting on the detailed definitions of the set to ensure that the methodology for measuring individual national indicators at a local level is sound.

The consultation period for this paper will run between 8 November and 21 December 2007.

Local Area Agreements and health | 4 November 2007

IDeA have just produced a web-page which outlines how the introduction of the new LAAS "brings a great opportunity to re-consider local health priorities and embed the wider determinants of health across your whole agreement.

The term ‘wider determinants of health’ refers to a whole range of factors which contribute to an individual’s health from their local environment and lifestyle choices (e.g. eating habits and physical activity) to their educational attainment and the quality of their housing."

Another possibility for MLAs?

Oona King - "The battle to engage" | 3 November 2007

Oona King co-chaired the "Make Space" Youth Review and published a brief report, The battle to engage: renewing democracy for the next generation, in September. According to Children Now, she has now been appointed as a political adviser to the Prime Minister, advising on re-engaging with young people.
