LGBT History Month - events in Waltham Forest | 31 January 2011

Walking Proud in East London
Vestry House Museum Vestry Road, Walthamstow E17

We kick off Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Month in style with the launch of a new oral history exhibition. ‘Walking Proud’ explores the LGBT memories of East Londoners. This is an invitation-only event.

To celebrate 2 years of meetings, a booklist of the books that have been read and other recommendations, will be available in every Library.

Laramie Project: Schools Event & Roadshow
w/c 14th February - Leytonstone School,
Students from across the borough are invited to come together to mark LGBT History month and get involved in the 'Laramie Project' workshops which are a continuation of the success of last year's production of the play at the Drill Hall in central London. Over the following months, students will be supported to deliver scenes from the play and an accompanying workshop to schools, community settings and staff . LGBT Safety Awareness Day

Personal Safety Information and products will be distributed from the SafetyNet’s Crime Prevention Van which will be situated at Walthamstow Town Square.

Contemporary Lesbian Fiction - An audience with Ellen Galford
Monday 7th March 7.45- 8.45 pm

Ellen Galford will read from her works, including ‘The Dyke and the Dybbuk’, and discuss what it was like to be an author of 'contemporary lesbian fiction' in the ‘80s & ‘90s. For more information contact the library on 020 8496 1070. Free event.

LGBT book displays - throughout February
There will be collections of books by LGBT authors on display in all libraries throughout February.

LGBT month takes place every year in February. It celebrates the lives and achievements of the LGBT community, and is an opportunity for all of us to learn more about the histories of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Waltham Forest Council are committed to respecting and promoting diversity. The Council will fly the Rainbow flag, sometimes called 'the Pride flag', during the month.
