Resettlement provision for children and young people: accommodation and education, training and employment | 22 June 2011
New report from the HM Inspectorate of Prisons - to summarise:
"This report raises a key question – how effective is the resettlement work conducted in custody in terms of the actual outcomes for young people? This was not monitored by establishments and our follow-up information highlights the need to look beyond the gate in order to evaluate the effectiveness of resettlement work. Overall the outcomes for our sample were very disappointing." [p10]

Youth Without Justice | 17 June 2011

Why is the number of children imprisoned in the UK one of the highest in Western Europe? Why do three quarters of under 18 year olds who are imprisoned reoffend within a year of leaving? This website asks why the UK’s youth justice system is failing so many young people. It is a place for people with first hand experience of the system to voice their views - to help discover what policy makers are doing right and what needs to change.

"On the map - Young prisoners - Decade of decline for numbers in custody" | 17 June 2011
Article in the TES Magazine, 27 May, which looks at the number of under-18s in custody in England & Wales.
"Figures for February 2011 show virtually the lowest number since the millennium, with 1,839 young males and 103 young females in custody. In 2002 they peaked at 3,608, some 1,666 higher than in February this year, a decline of not far short of a half in the total number in detention."

"Grave concerns that children still being abused and unlawfully treated in custody" | 8 June 2011
The Children's Rights Alliance for England has published Use of force on children in custody: submission to Lord Carlile of Berriew QC's 2011 public hearing, which sets out the inequalities in protection for children in different types of custodial establishments; criticises 'the absence of children's accounts of their care and treatment' in Ofsted inspection reports; and makes seven immediate priorities for legislative and policy change.
